In the past, jaw surgery required minimal jaw movement until the jaws healed, but research has shown that this is no longer true. With the use of braces, more mobility is possible. Your dental surgeon will recommend a surgical jaw reset if you have severely misaligned jaw bones or a poor bite. Before and after surgery, braces are used as anchors, and we determine whether you need the braces or not.
When Should I Wear Braces?
Most jaw surgery patients will wear braces before and after jaw surgery. Before surgery, your surgeon will want to establish how much of the misalignment is there and will use braces to align your teeth. Once the teeth are in the best position, they can properly place the jaws. During the surgery, your surgeon will maintain your jaw by attaching elastic bands to the braces and, afterward, put the braces back in position until the jaw heals. A successful surgery with a healed jaw implies the teeth are in the perfect place in the mouth. Upon removal of the braces, you will wear a retainer to keep your teeth in their new position, similar to a patient who had braces without surgery.
How Long After Surgery Will the Braces Come Off?
Your dental surgeon will recommend a treatment timing and plan, including the duration for which you will wear braces after surgery. While the whole orthodontic process will take up to two years for complete healing, you will need the braces for up to nine months after surgery for full recovery. During this time, the braces will correct minor issues post-surgery before fitting you for a retainer.
Bottom Line
Braces are crucial in correcting your teeth alignment before and after surgery, and your dental surgeon will help you establish how long you will wear them. Schedule an appointment with us to learn more about braces before and after jaw surgery.
