How Much Bleeding is Too Much Following Oral Surgery?

Posted on 8/1/2024 by Dr McMurray
A man in dental chair ready for oral surgeryHaving your wisdom teeth extracted, getting a dental implant placed, or undergoing another type of oral surgery can be nerve-wracking. After the procedure, it's natural to experience some bleeding, but how much is too much? This is a common concern among patients, and understanding what to expect can help alleviate anxiety and ensure a smooth recovery.

What to Expect

Following oral surgery, some bleeding is normal and expected. It typically subsides within the first 24-48 hours. The bleeding may appear as a slow ooze or trickle, and you may notice traces of blood in your saliva. This is due to the disruption of small blood vessels during the surgical procedure.

Managing Bleeding at Home

Here are some tips to manage bleeding at home after oral surgery:

•  Bite on gauze: Apply firm pressure by biting on a gauze pad placed directly on the surgical site for 30-45 minutes. Repeat as needed.
•  Ice pack: Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel to the affected area for 15-20 minutes at a time to reduce swelling and promote clotting.
•  Elevate your head: Keep your head elevated on pillows while resting or sleeping to minimize swelling and promote drainage.
•  Avoid strenuous activity: Avoid strenuous activity, blowing your nose, and spitting for the first few days after surgery, as this can dislodge the blood clot and increase bleeding.
•  Stay hydrated: Drink plenty of fluids to avoid dehydration, which can slow down the healing process.
•  Avoid smoking and alcohol: These substances can irritate the surgical site and delay healing.

When to Contact Your Oral Surgeon

While some bleeding is normal, excessive or uncontrolled bleeding requires immediate attention from your oral surgeon. Here are some signs that indicate you should contact your doctor:

•  Bleeding that soaks more than two gauze pads within an hour.
•  Bright red bleeding that doesn't slow down after applying pressure for 30 minutes.
•  Blood clots that are coughed up or vomited.
•  Difficulty swallowing or breathing.
•  Swelling that increases significantly after the first 48 hours.
•  Fever above 101°
•  F.
•  Severe pain that is not relieved by medication.

Importance of Follow-up Care

Following your oral surgeon's post-operative instructions and attending follow-up appointments are crucial for optimal healing and restoration. During these appointments, your oral surgeon will monitor your progress, check for signs of infection, and remove any sutures if necessary.

Remember:

While some bleeding is normal after oral surgery, it's important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of excessive bleeding and contact your oral surgeon promptly if needed. By following your oral surgeon's instructions and practicing good oral care, you can ensure a smooth recovery and achieve a successful outcome.
