What to Expect After a Wisdom Tooth Extraction

Posted on 5/15/2026 by Dr McMurray
Xray of wisdom teethGetting your wisdom teeth removed is a common procedure, and knowing what to expect afterward can make the recovery process smoother and more comfortable. Let's walk through what happens after a tooth extraction so you are well-prepared.

Immediate Post-Op: The First 24 Hours

Right after your wisdom tooth extraction, you'll need to bite down firmly on a gauze pad placed by your oral surgeon. This helps to stop the bleeding and allows a blood clot to form in the extraction site. It's normal to experience some oozing of blood during the first few hours. Change the gauze pads as needed, usually every 30-45 minutes, until the bleeding slows.

Swelling is also common. Applying ice packs to your cheeks for 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off, can help reduce swelling and discomfort. This is most effective during the first 24 hours.

Pain management is important. Your oral surgeon will likely prescribe pain medication. Take it as directed, even if you're not feeling much pain initially, to stay ahead of any discomfort.

Stick to a soft food diet. Think applesauce, yogurt, soup, and mashed potatoes. Avoid anything that requires chewing or could irritate the extraction sites.

The First Few Days: Focusing on Healing

Over the next few days, focus on allowing the extraction sites to heal. Continue with the soft food diet and be sure to stay hydrated.

Oral care is crucial during this time. Gently rinse your mouth with warm salt water (1/2 teaspoon of salt in 8 ounces of water) after meals. This helps keep the area clean and promotes healing. Avoid vigorous rinsing or spitting, as this can dislodge the blood clot.

Continue taking your pain medication as needed. You may notice that the pain gradually decreases over the next few days. If the pain worsens or you experience other concerning symptoms, contact your oral surgeon.

One Week and Beyond: Gradual Return to Normal

Around a week after your wisdom tooth extraction, you should start feeling significantly better. The swelling should have subsided, and you can gradually reintroduce more solid foods into your diet.

Continue to maintain good oral hygiene by brushing and flossing gently, being careful around the extraction sites. You may still notice a small amount of discomfort or stiffness in your jaw, but this should continue to improve over time.

Full healing can take several weeks to months, depending on the complexity of the extraction and your individual healing ability.

Potential Complications: What to Watch For

While wisdom tooth extractions are generally safe, it's important to be aware of potential complications. One of the most common is dry socket, which occurs when the blood clot is dislodged, exposing the bone and nerves. This can cause intense pain. If you suspect you have a dry socket, contact your oral surgeon immediately.

Other potential complications include infection, nerve damage, and prolonged bleeding. If you experience any of these issues, seek professional help right away.

Long-Term Considerations

Sometimes, missing teeth, like wisdom teeth, can affect the bite and alignment of the remaining teeth. While wisdom teeth often cause more problems than they solve, in rare cases, a discussion about the need for restoration dentistry might be warranted if the extraction significantly alters your oral function.

Understanding what to expect after a wisdom tooth extraction can help you have a smooth and comfortable recovery. Follow your oral surgeon's instructions carefully, and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions or concerns. Proper aftercare is key to a successful outcome.
