Oral Surgery South Valley Oral and Facial Surgery CA 95123-1220When scheduling oral surgery, patients often feel overwhelmed with the amount of information provided. Included in this information is what to drink.

Following oral surgery, you will not feel like doing much but do need to eat and drink in order to stay healthy and heal properly. Below is a short guide on what beverages you can have and what to avoid after experiencing oral surgery.

Cold Liquid Diet
Depending on the type of oral surgery you have, it may be recommended that you have a cold liquid diet. At least for a 24-hour time frame. You can enjoy yogurt smoothies or milkshakes, both are tasty and easy to swallow after oral surgery. The coolness of the smoothie or milkshake will help with swelling as well as feel good as it goes down your throat.

What to Avoid After an Oral Surgery

After oral surgery, there are beverages you should avoid. Alcohol as well as carbonated drinks are a big no-no. We also tell our patients that a straw should not be used as you drink any liquids. As your surgery area heals, a blood clot is formed.

If you were to use a straw, the blood clot could be dislodged which can lead to a dry socket which can be very painful. Always use a spoon for smoothies or milkshakes if they are too thick and never use a straw to drink standard liquids.

Water is always a good choice as it provides you with a quality drink that will not affect the area of your surgery. Within the first 24-hours after surgery, you will not feel like drinking much so as long as you follow the rules as instructed, you will be able to heal properly.

Be sure to stock up on drinks you will need or ingredients to create milkshakes or smoothies. This way, you can make your drinks or have someone do it for you post-surgery.
