Why We Trust Intraoral Cameras Over Just X-rays

Posted on 8/23/2018 by Dr McMurray
Why We Trust Intraoral Cameras Over Just X-raysX-rays are excellent tools to really see what is going on in your mouth and allows our dentist to determine what is the best treatment for your condition.

However, X-rays don't show us everything in detail and they can miss things like cavities, which an intraoral camera can catch.

What is an Intraoral Camera?

An intraoral camera is a small digital device, about the size of a dental mirror, that is placed in the mouth and can catch extremely small details that may be otherwise missed with just an X-ray. Because it's extremely important to catch dental conditions early, this technology can be extremely useful to start treatment right away.

How Does an Intraoral Camera Work?

An intraoral camera is equipped with a tiny but powerful lens and built-in LED light, that is moved around, taking pictures of different areas of a patient's mouth. These videos are transmitted to a computer to be analyzed further.

The video can also be frozen, to create a screenshot, edited and stored on the computer and shared with the patient so they can see what is going on in their mouth as well. The images from an intraoral camera can be zoomed in for up to 25 times magnification.

Sometimes, patients can be intimidated coming to our office because they think that whatever treatment they need will cause pain and some of the tools used by our hygienists and dentists can look scary. However, using an intraoral camera is less painful than getting X-rays.

An intraoral camera doesn't replace the need for X-rays. While the accuracy of the intraoral camera can give you extremely good views of the inside of your entire mouth, only the X-rays can see what is happening inside the teeth, gums, and bones.
