What to Do to Keep Your Mouth Clean and Healthy Following a Tooth Extraction

Posted on 1/10/2019 by Dr McMurray
What to Do to Keep Your Mouth Clean and Healthy Following a Tooth ExtractionThe reason you need a tooth extraction is because you have a problem with that tooth. The problem could include that it does not fit in the mouth, that it is causing pain in the gums and surrounding teeth or that there is a disease in the tooth.

An extraction can help resolve the problems, but it does not guarantee that the problem will not return. The best thing you can do is learn how to keep your mouth clean and healthy after an extraction.

Steps Immediately Following the Extraction

In the first couple days after an extraction, it is into possible to take care of your oral health the way that you normally do. Brushing around the area of the wound could cause more problems. If you are not careful you could cause bleeding. Aggressive brushing can cause swelling and other problems. There are still ways to keep your mouth and teeth clean during the first days.

Use a soft brush to keep the teeth clean. Avoid flossing around the extraction site. It is also a good idea to use an antiseptic mouthwash to help keep the mouth clean and free of bacteria. You can also keep your mouth cleaner by controlling your diet. Avoid sticky foods and foods that can discolor teeth.

As the Surgical Site Heals

It can take a week or so for the extraction site to heal. If stitches were used, they are typically removed after about 7 days. This allows for better cleaning through brushing and flossing. Continue to use a soft brush and mouthwash throughout your recovery. Smokers should refrain from using tobacco after the extraction. It is a good time to quit smoking completely.

After an extraction the key to good oral health really does not change. It requires good habits done every day.
