Recovering from Tooth Extractions Due to an Abscess

Posted on 3/10/2019 by Dr McMurray
Recovering from Tooth Extractions Due to an AbscessAn abscess is a pocket of pus in your mouth that is formed because of a decayed or rotted tooth. Sometimes we will try to treat the abscess using antibiotics.

Often, though, the best way to treat it is to remove the bad tooth. If you have that type of oral surgery, here is what you will need to do in order to care for the area after you return home.

Antibiotics

In most cases, we will prescribe antibiotics for after the tooth has been removed. It is very important that you follow the directions and take the medicine on the schedule provided. Also, you will want to finish the prescription. Do not stop taking your antibiotics because you are feeling better. You need to finish the bottle in order for the medicine to work properly. If this is not the case, we will let you know.

Foods
You will want to avoid acidic foods and also things such as coffee and tea for several days while your mouth heals. If you are in a lot of pain, stick to a liquid diet until you start to feel better.

Salt Rinse

There is a good chance that we will tell you that you should rinse your mouth with warm salt water several times a day. Dissolve half a teaspoon salt in water that is warm but not hot. Rinse your mouth with the solution, and make sure that you rinse the area that was affected.

The abscess should drain after the surgery. If you notice that it is not draining, or if it feels hot if you touch it with your tongue, it is a good idea to come in and see us. Also, if you notice and you have a fever, you should let us know right away.
