Whether you underwent a root canal, had dental implants put in, or had your wisdom teeth removed, any dental surgery is critical and should not be taken lightly. Recovery is a vital piece to feeling better from the procedure you just had done. While the tough part is over, healing from any surgery requires that you observe certain important precautions to prevent post-op pain and infections, both of which have serious complications linked to them. Use of Ice Post-OpImmediately post-op, expect there to be some minor pain and swelling. Most instances of pain can be easily managed with over the counter medication and the application of ice packs. Ice packs are a great way to reduce swelling. The coolness of the packs also serves as a cooling anesthetic that ensures the pain stays at tolerable levels. The trick to using ice wisely is to remember that ice is only effective up to 48 hours post operatively. If used after this period, it really will not help much. How To Use The Ice PacksYou are going to want ice that conforms to the area you are placing it. Put it on the side of the face where the surgery took place. Hold the ice in place for 15-20 minutes, and make sure to take 15 minute breaks, or longer, between ice cycles. This is meant to chill the area, not make your entire face feel frozen. This can be done as necessary and while you are awake over the first 48 hours. After that, if you still need assistance with minimal pain or swelling, it is best to use heat. Follow these simple instructions, and in 2-3 days, you should be well on your way to back to your normal life. If pain or swelling persists, make sure to call our office so we can make sure everything is alright. |
