If Your Crown Breaks, We May Need to Figure Out Why

Posted on 9/21/2020 by Dr McMurray
If Your Crown Breaks, We May Need to Figure Out WhyCrowns are one of the most versatile dental devices. They're used to cover a tooth like a “cap” above the gumline for a number of reasons, including cloaking discolored teeth, filling up lost portions of chipped or broken teeth, and many other reasons. But despite their versatility, most crowns are not among the most durable dental devices. They're susceptible to damage from various causes. In some instances, you might be oblivious to the reason behind your damaged crown, and we might need to investigate the cause at our offices using top-grade tools and techniques.

Crowns can break due to normal wear and tear, impact from accidents, grinding teeth, biting on hard things, etc. In other rarer cases, crowns may break or become loose due to the displacement of the underlining teeth. In such cases, the crowns can't just be fixed back in place because it's not just the crown that's sustained damages, but the tooth it's covering as well. The broken or loose tooth needs to be restored as well. In other cases, the tooth's pulp might also be affected, requiring a special course of diagnosis and treatment.

How Best to Treat Broken or Chipped Crown

It's always advisable to reach out to our dentists as soon as possible whenever your crown is chipped or broken. You can try first-aid measures like taking off the crown completely to prevent swallowing it, applying pressure on the damaged tooth using gauze, or trying to hold the broken crown in place using dental cement.

In most cases, damaged crowns are accompanied by tooth pains, sore gums, bleeding gums, sensitive teeth, and other dental problems. You also need to report these symptoms promptly to have them treated at our offices. We usually repair chipped or broken dental crown, but if the damage is severe, you might need a new crown. If the tooth and supporting structures have sustained any injury, we'll recommend other courses of action besides just restoring the crown. Call us today to get a well-rounded treatment for your chipped or broken crown.
