Common Causes of Tooth Loss and What to Do?

Posted on 4/26/2021 by Dr McMurray
Common Causes of Tooth Loss and What to Do?Growing up, you may think of tooth loss as a gradual transition to old age. However, do you know that tooth loss in adulthood can be a distressing life experience? According to a study, 45% of adults who lose their teeth have difficulty adjusting to the loss.

There are several causes of tooth loss, and understanding them is the best way to prevent it. Let's look at some of the most common causes of tooth loss.

Poor Eating Habits

One of the most common causes of tooth loss is poor eating habits. When you consume many sugary foods and drinks, the harmful bacteria led to oral cavities. If left untreated, cavities in your mouth damage the tooth enamel and further progress to your teeth' deeper layers. Over time, it leads to significant pain and eventually tooth loss.

Poor Oral Hygiene Practices

Another leading cause of tooth loss is poor oral hygiene practices. When you don't brush your teeth twice a day and skip flossing every day, plaque formation is inevitable. Regular oral hygiene practices such as brushing twice a day or floss at least once a day can inhibit plaque buildup on and between teeth. As a result, you are less likely to form cavities, which are a primary cause of increased tooth sensitivity, potential tooth decay, gum diseases, and tooth loss.

Gum Diseases

Healthy gums hold healthy teeth. But when you have infected gum tissue due to bacteria in the mouth, it causes a sticky plaque on teeth. While regular brushing can help remove plaque, it can harden up and form tartar. Professional oral cleaning is the only way to remove tartar. If left untreated, it can infect the gums leading to periodontal diseases. When your gum health is compromised, it may lead to tooth loss.

Accidents

Unfortunately, accidents are a leading cause contributing to tooth loss in adulthood. A car accident, sports injury, and fall are common causes that result in missing teeth.

Other Causes

Sometimes, it's not just about accidents and what you eat. Harmful behaviors and habits can also lead to tooth loss. Smoking and teeth grinding may fall into this category of causes of tooth loss.
