Treatment Options We Can Provide for Cracked Teeth

Treatment Options We Can Provide for Cracked TeethThe treatment options we can provide for cracked teeth depend on what type of crack your tooth has been subjected to. Regardless of the type of trauma, it is important to visit our office so we can assess and begin treatment immediately.

Types of Cracked Teeth

Small cracks in the outer tooth enamel, called craze lines, are quite common. Often painless, these cracks may even go unnoticed. Also painless, a fractured cusp occurs when the chewing surface of the tooth breaks off. Sometimes teeth split. If the crack is vertical, this is more serious. Cracks can originate from either the chewing surface or the root and infection can spread into the bone and gum from the crack.

Treatment Options for Cracked Teeth

If you have craze lines, treatment may not be necessary. However, if you have one of the other types of cracked teeth, our staff can help you with a restorative treatment. \ We use dental crowns, which are fake teeth (caps) that fit over damaged teeth. This is ideal if the crack is severe, but the tooth does not have to be removed. Holding the teeth together, dental crowns restore the original shape and function of the tooth. One of the most popular treatments is to use dental bonds which fill in the cracks with composite resin. If the crack has reached the dental pulp, a root canal may be necessary. Lastly, we do extract teeth due to extreme decay, trauma, injury, or damage. If a crack extends below the gum line, we will most likely discuss this mode of treatment with you. Patients may be surprised how nice a dental implant looks following the extraction of a severely cracked tooth.

In any case, it is important to come see us if you suspect, see, or feel a crack in your teeth. Our staff is highly trained and strives to offer superior care for your cracked teeth.
