How To Be Ready Before Oral Surgery

Posted on 5/24/2021 by Dr McMurray
How To Be Ready Before Oral SurgeryIf you are expected to undergo an oral surgery, you will want to prepare yourself so that you can undergo the surgery without any complications. In most cases, oral surgeries are performed on an outpatient basis, involving either a local or general anesthetic. There are several things you can do in preparation for your oral surgery.

Check Your Diet

If the procedure will use a general anesthetic and you will need to observe preoperative guidelines, just like anyone undergoing a surgery. In terms of your diet, you should not drink or eat anything eight hours before your surgery. However, if a local anesthetic will be used, you may be allowed a light meal a few hours before the surgery. Ensure that you floss and brush thoroughly before the procedure starts. Furthermore, it is important to avoid smoking at least 12 hours before the oral surgery. This habit is also not recommended after an oral surgery.

Have the Required Medications

There are several medications you will need after undergoing an oral surgery. These medications help facilitate quick recovery from the procedure and relieve any pain as a result of it. Our professionals will advise on the required medications and how to use them. Remember to use only recommended OTC medications to avoid unnecessary side effects.

Organize Transportation

While this might look obvious, most patients tend to underestimate the impact of oral surgeries. We recommend that you have a friend or family to accompany you to our offices and take you home after the surgery. If this isn't possible, you shouldn't think of driving yourself. This is because the procedure may impair your reflexes and make it hard for you to drive steadily. You can opt to hire a taxi that will ensure you arrive home safe and sound. Contact our offices for more information on how to prepare for an oral surgery.
