Artificial Intelligence and dentistry

Posted on 2/7/2022 by Dr McMurray
Artificial Intelligence and dentistryThe technological revolution is gathering pace, with innovations being developed at unprecedented rates. The same can be said in the world of dentistry, where there have been numerous technological advancements that have improved diagnosing, testing, and treating of oral diseases. Some of these advancements include 3D imagery, Chairside Economical Restoration of Esthetic Ceramics (CEREC) Crowns, and laser dentistry. However, none of these deliver much promise and potential to what artificial intelligence can deliver in the dentistry field. At our facility, we always endeavor to research the most modern techniques, to find the ones that we are sure can help us deliver comprehensive dental services.

What is Artificial Intelligence?

Artificial intelligence (AI) is a diverse computer science field that is focused on developing smart machines that can perform tasks that typically need human intelligence to complete. It involves computer software, fed with huge amounts of data which allows the program or machine to perform these tasks. For instance, a machine program can be fed with data that is required to identify lesions in your mouth. The system can detect lesions since they are abnormally colored and of a unique shape. In the modern world, many medical fields use machine learning which is a branch of AI. However deep learning is increasingly being adopted by various medical experts.

AI in Radiology

AI has shown tremendous potential in detecting and identifying anatomical structures. For instance, some machines have been programmed to identify and label numerous teeth obtained from periapical radiographs.

Oral Pathology

AI has been excellent in helping dentists detect and diagnose oral lesions early enough for a successful prognosis. AI is important in the regard that it can help to differentiate between cancerous and precancerous lesions, and therefore the dentists can make the accurate diagnosis and as such administer the correct treatment.
