A head and neck exam is done by your dentist every six months. This is an examination that involves checking your jaw, head, and neck. The dentist will check your bones, tissues, organs, and other structures of the mouth for signs of problems like oral cancer.
How is it done?
A Head and neck exam is done on two parts where the first part is an external examination the dentist checks your eyes, lymph nodes, eyes, glands, and areas around the neck and head. The dentist will also check the lips, palpitate structures with fingers, and observe you.
The other examination is the interior part, where the dentist observes and examines inside the mouth. The dentists check the teeth and the gums for any sign of gum disease and see if there is plaque and tartar. The dentist then checks on the roof of your mouth, under the tongue and inside cheeks, your tonsils and the throat and also feel the bones around the jaw, and finally check on the tongue surface.
